In late February, an alarming unsafe tower crane incident was observed in central London – two men riding inside a basket suspended from a crane. Despite the video evidence of their dangerous behavior and numerous safety violations, our experienced commentator had no hesitation regarding his assessment: “This setup falls far short of any reasonable standard for occupational health and safety.” From inadequate guard rails to high-speed operations without safeguards like harnesses or cages with roofs – this scenario is all too familiar in its stark disregard for worker safety.
It is not apparent if these are official workers or just some punks looking for a thrill who happen to have high visibility jackets.
It’s hard to believe, but true – the men were spotted committing alarming unsafe tower crane practice: riding the outside of an unprotected basket on what appears to be a major worksite. This is particularly shocking given modern safety regulations and highlights how seriously such breaches must be taken.

Best Tower Crane Safety Practices
When it comes to tower crane usage, safety should always be the top priority. To ensure that operators and workers onsite are operating in a safe environment, it is important to follow essential safety practices when using tower cranes. Some of the best safety practices for operating tower cranes include:
- Making sure the crane is properly inspected and maintained according to standards set by the manufacturer, as well as any applicable local regulations.
- Ensuring all personnel working around or near the crane are adequately trained and knowledgeable of the area’s specific safety procedures.
- Following proper loading limits for each load being lifted by the crane, and never exceeding them under any circumstances.
- Implementing wind speed restrictions during operation to avoid possible tipping over from strong winds.
- Utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times when handling loads with the crane to prevent potential accidents or injuries.
By following these safety practices, you can help guarantee a safe work environment while using your tower cranes.
